The Powell St Project started off as an opportunity to purchase some spare land from the Council that they no longer needed, with the intention to offer to 1st home buyers affordable, well located housing.....a short walk to the train station.
After some significant local opposition that was unable to be supported by factual town planning and urban design rules, the project was granted Resource Consent. However, this was not until two Environment Court Hearings had been won by PAIML.
This consent process is a true testament to PAIML's vision and determination. Now some years later, it is often referenced by Senior Council Planners as a model example of how brownfields intensification should be delivered.
